Topic: Employment Law – Miller Johnson Updates

Speaker: Jeffrey Gray, Nathan Plantinga, Mary Tabin, and Tripp VanderWal

Is spring really in the air? Come to the annual legal and legislative update from the labor and employment attorneys at Miller Johnson and find out exactly when we can all say goodbye to winter! Well, not exactly. We do promise to provide our usual documentary on the most significant developments of the past year. Unlike many years, we do not have to classify this year’s presentation in the horror genre! Actually, it is really more of a drama, featuring plenty of struggles but with a strong thread of hope and an uplifting finale. (This film has not yet been rated.)

    We will cover the following:

    • Increased focus from the EEOC on harassment prevention in the #MeToo era and appropriate employer responses, including training and investigations.
    • Changes to health and welfare plans made by the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2020
    • How Michigan’s No-Fault Reform may impact a self-funded group health plan’s coordination of benefit provisions.
    • Significant new legislation impacting retirement plans, such as the SECURE Act, including the effective dates of certain mandatory changes to retirement plans, and steps that plan sponsors should be taking before the end of the year to implement the new rules related to hardship distributions.
    • Supreme Court’s imminent ruling on sexual orientation and gender identity
    • DOL’s white collar exemptions
    • Several favorable rulings from the NLRB affecting both union and non-union employers
    • Politics in the workplace
    • Recreational marijuana
    • Employer self-destruction by email

We reserve the right to add more if: (a) we feel like it; and (b) you’re still awake.

New this year: we’ve added time for questions!

Not new this year: one lucky table will walk away with fabulous gifts and prizes for having outwitted the room in our substantive quiz.
