    Topic: Peter Kok’s Friends - Legal Law Update

    Summary submitted by our own Nate Plantinga:  Is it already that time again?  Legal updates are like the dentist—they seem far more frequent than they actually are.  No doubt due to the excitement and anticipation.  We hope you can make it again this year as we face through yet another speed round update on the salient developments in employment and employee benefits law.  We’ll try to keep politics out of it in an effort not to get rotten fruit thrown at us, but the hard truth of the matter is that laws come from Congress, executive orders come from the President, and the Supreme Court Justices aren’t exactly “neutral.”  So bring your tomatoes…

    Among the topics we hope to cover are:

    • The “Me Too” movement, and its impact on national workforces
    • EEOC’s new strategic plan and focus
    • The NLRB’s flurry of reversals of precedent
    • The DOL’s latest position on salaries and independent contractors
    • The latest developments on the meaning of “sex” under Title VII

    We will also attempt to unravel the ongoing saga of healthcare in the United States of America.  Despite numerous attempts, the GOP failed to repeal, or even substantially replace, the Affordable Care Act.  But the GOP was successful in passing the most comprehensive tax reform in more than three decades.  And while the final tax reform legislation did not impact employee benefit plans as much as in its proposed forms, it did make several meaningful changes.  We will cover these changes as they relate to group health and retirement plans, as well as provide an update regarding some agency activities (IRS, DOL, etc.) that you should be aware of.
